Caring for Fresh Cut Flowers: Make Your Bouquet Last

You have just received a gorgeous bouquet from Coastal Blooms, and you want it to look beautiful for as long as possible. With proper care, most fresh flower arrangements can last seven to fourteen days. Here are our expert tips for maximizing the life of your fresh cut flowers in Northwest Florida's warm climate.

The First Hour: Setting Up Your Bouquet

When your flowers arrive, they have already been hydrated and arranged by our florists. If they are in a vase, check the water level and top it off with cool, fresh water. If your bouquet is wrapped in paper or cellophane, unwrap it promptly and place the stems in a clean vase with fresh water and the flower food packet that comes with your delivery.

Before placing stems in the vase, cut about half an inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This creates a fresh surface for water absorption. Use sharp scissors or pruning shears for a clean cut — dull tools can crush the stems and impede water uptake.

Water: The Most Important Factor

Fresh water is the single most important factor in keeping your flowers alive. Change the vase water every two days. Each time, rinse the vase thoroughly to remove bacteria, re-cut the stems, and add fresh flower food. In NW Florida's heat, you may want to change water daily during summer months.

Use room-temperature water for most flowers. Cold water slows bacterial growth, but very cold water can shock some delicate blooms. The exception is spring bulb flowers like tulips and daffodils, which prefer cool water.

Location Matters

Where you place your flowers significantly affects their longevity. Keep arrangements away from direct sunlight, heating vents, air conditioning drafts, and ripening fruit. Ethylene gas from fruit accelerates flower aging. The ideal spot is a cool area with indirect light.

In NW Florida's warm climate, air-conditioned rooms are actually ideal for fresh flowers. The controlled temperature helps blooms last longer compared to non-climate-controlled spaces.

Daily Maintenance

Each day, remove any wilted or dead flowers and foliage. Decaying plant material promotes bacterial growth that shortens the life of remaining healthy flowers. Also remove any leaves that sit below the waterline, as submerged foliage decomposes quickly and clouds the water.

Flower Food: Does It Really Work?

Yes. Commercial flower food contains three key ingredients: sugar (energy for the flowers), an acidifier (to lower the water's pH for better absorption), and a biocide (to kill bacteria). Always use the packet provided with your Coastal Blooms delivery. If you run out, you can make a simple substitute: one teaspoon of sugar, one teaspoon of white vinegar, and a few drops of bleach per quart of water.

Flower-Specific Care Tips

Roses

Roses are particularly thirsty flowers. Check water levels daily and re-cut stems every two to three days. Remove guard petals (the outer, slightly bruised petals) to reveal the beautiful bloom beneath.

Lilies

Remove the pollen-bearing anthers from lilies as they open. This prevents pollen stains on clothing and surfaces, and also helps the blooms last longer by preventing pollination.

Tulips

Tulips continue to grow after cutting and are phototropic, meaning they bend toward light. Rotate the vase daily for even growth, and use a tall vase to support their stems. They prefer cold water.

Tropical Flowers

Tropical blooms like birds of paradise and anthuriums prefer warmer water and higher humidity. Lightly misting them can help in NW Florida's air-conditioned interiors.

When to Reorder

When your arrangement starts showing more than a few wilted blooms, it is time for a fresh delivery. Many of our Coastal Blooms customers set up regular weekly or biweekly deliveries to keep their homes and offices always bright with fresh flowers.
